UK Travel Industry Statistics Revealed

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

The UK travel industry is showing some signs of recovery with more people holidaying to the UK and making business trips, according to new figures released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

There are indications that the travel and tourism sector has become more stable with business visits recording short-term growth following a continual drop in the number of trips to and from the country.

The statistics show that between July and October, business related visits both to the UK and abroad by UK residents were six per cent higher than a year earlier, as well as holiday visits to the UK  increasing six per cent.

ABROAD

It seems less people are travelling out of the country though with holiday visits abroad falling by three per cent.

The number of British citizens who went to Europe dropped by eight per cent from 47.0  million to 43.0 million, while those who went to North America fell decreased nine per cent from 3.8 million to 3.4 million. Of those visiting other parts of the world it fell by two per cent, from 9.1 million to 8.9 million.

The month May in particular saw an increase in air travel as the industry recovered from the effects of the volcanic ash cloud in April.

FOREIGN VISITORS

So we have established less people left the country, but on average more people did in fact visit the UK.

During the year, the number of visits by overseas residents and foreign visitors to the UK remained on average the same when compared to 2009 and this includes the UK visits by people from Europe, which stayed at 22.0 million; while those from North America fell by five per cent, from 3.5 million to 3.3 million.

Visits from other parts of the world did increase by a small two per cent to 4.3 million.

Roger  Smith,  Head  of  the International Passenger Survey for ONS, said:  “It does appear that there are signs that the large falls we have seen  in  the recent past have begun to stabilise and show some signs of recovery. Business  visits  in both directions have picked up recently. October  saw  a  small  rise  in  holiday visits both to and from the UK compared with the same months a year earlier.”

Cheryl Cole to Move to LA?

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Cheryl Cole is allegedly planning to move abroad to start a new life in Los Angeles, America.

Once she has sold her £6million Surrey marital home she once shared with love rat hubby Ashley Cole, it has emerged she wants to pack up and head out to the Californian State.

The news follows recent hearsay that the Girls Aloud singer has landed a £3million deal to be a judge on the US version of The X Factor.

And there is speculation that the move is to be closer to her rumoured boyfriend Derek Hough; who she first met when he appeared in her ‘Parachute’ music video earlier this year.

Derek’s stepdad Aaron Nelson reportedly told The Sun newspaper that Cheryl, 27, plans to move there to be closer to the 25-year-old dancer.

He told The Sun: “Cheryl is looking at moving over here, which will be good for Derek. I’m not sure exactly what they have decided about living together. It’s his business.”

“When things got difficult for Cheryl, she came over to be with him. Derek’s pretty level-headed most of the time. He’s a good guy. He’s always been a good guy and he’s very supportive.”

The 54-year-old added: “She feels indebted to him – all to do with the fact that he is kind to her. He supports her, but that is Derek’s nature. He’s a cheerleader for her. He just wants to see her do well.”

“Derek knows what’s been going on. She came over to see him a few weeks ago. I can say that when you love someone you want to be around them and that’s why he likes her.”

VISA WORRY

However, the move to LA  could be jeopardised because of visa issues.

US law states that all convictions must be disclosed on visa applications and, in serious cases, an appeal may be necessary.

Back in 2003,  Cheryl (was) Tweedy was convicted of assault after she drunkenly punched a female nightclub attendant.

National Travel Survey Results 2010

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Thousands of people travel each year; for personal or work reasons.

The Department of Travel issued a National Travel Survey in September 2010 regarding information on personal travel in Great Britain.

The survey collated information on where, how, why and when people travel as well as factors which affect personal travel such as car availability, driving licence holding and access to key services.

Here are the following results…

  • There has been a steady falling trend in trip rates since 1995/97, while average distance travelled per person per year remained relatively stable until 2007, then has declined slightly over the last two years.
  • Overall in 2009, there were an average of 973 trips per person per year, 6,775 miles travelled, and an average trip length of 7.0 miles.
  • Most of the fall in overall trips rates between 1995/97 and 2009 can be accounted for by a fall in shopping, visiting friends at private homes and commuting. The last two years has seen a 9 per cent fall in the number of commuting trips.
  • Since 1995/97 the proportion of men with a full driving licence has remained relatively stable at around 80 per cent but it has continued to increase among women to 65 per cent in 2009. Licence holding also continued to grow among older people.
  • Trips by car (driver and passenger) accounted for 63 per cent of all trips made and 79 per cent of distance travelled in 2009.
  • On average, females make more trips than males, but males travel much further per year.
  • The average annual car mileage has decreased as the number of cars per household has risen, falling from about 9,700 in 1995/97 to 8,420 in 2009. In particular, there were large falls in business and commuting mileage.
