BBC Moving Your Home Abroad Series

Friday, December 16th, 2011

shutterstock_80709910More and more people are hiring international removals and moving abroad for work.

As a result, the BBC have launched a new series  where they will look at the problems and successes that come with uprooting to a foreign country.

‘At Home Abroad’ will explore all the trials and tribulations of moving overseas from marital issues to relocation dreams and migration numbers.

The first part of the series discusses how an overseas job can affect family life and it interviewed many adults to find out how it affected the spouses and home life in general. On average, about 80% of expatriate workers move with their spouses.

Moving an employee abroad is expensive with regards to relocation allowance, benefits and living expenses.

TRAILING SPOUSES

One case included a woman called Nicki Thorogood, when in 2008 her husband’s company moved him from England to New York and the transition wasn’t easy. She moved four months earlier because she didn’t want to move the three children halfway through a school year and the mother had to move the boys into a new house, a new town and country she didn’t know by herself.

Situations like this can be extremely difficult, especially because she had to leave her own job and many can find suburban life a struggle when compared to living in a small village in England. Even three years later, she still dreams about returning to the UK.

LACK OF SUPPORT

According to a 2011 study of global employment trends, 60% of trailing partners were employed before relocating but only 15% found work after moving. And according to a 2009 survey conducted by the Permits Foundation, only 18% of spouses felt they had been adequately supported by their partner’s companies.

Andrew Walker, the director of global mobility at WorleyParsons, which oversees more than 3,000 employees who move abroad, told the BBC: “The number one reason for assignment failure is the family’s inability to acclimatise and adjust to the new location.”

VISAS

Another issue highlighted in the series is spouses being given visas and even the workers themselves have to reapply for working visas every few years. It is said that countries China, Japan, Brazil and India are the hardest places for spouses to look for work after relocation. Australia is reportedly the best place that is the most hospitable to expatriates’ significant other.

And BBC reports that the stress of visas and culture shock can lead to marital discord. During and after a move there is emotional fallout and one interviewee said that couples usually come home very married or extremely divorced.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

But the series has pointed out the benefit which is an increase in entrepreneurship among trailing partners in creating business opportunities for themselves.

The BBC To Move More Staff To Salford

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Mark Thompson is expected to announce more job cuts at the BBC with plans to quit its west London home entirely.

The Director-general of the British Broadcasting Corporation is to reveal that it will possibly sell its London home land to Chelsea football club as part of a move that will see more staff relocated to Salford.

The public broadcaster implemented a cost-cutting strategy earlier this year which will see nearly 2,000 jobs cut and many programmes being eliminated to save money.

Several thousand employees based at the London sites, including Thompson himself, will be relocated up north. Many staff has moved to Salford already and it is now the home to Radio 5 Live, Blue Peter and Match of the Day.

The BBC has reportedly had talks about attracting Premier League clubs Chelsea or Queen’s Park Rangers as buyers of the site.

Further predicted plans include shutting down the factual department in BBC Birmingham and that BBC drama could move to Cardiff, where programmes such as Doctor Who are made already. The TV Centre will be vacated by 2015.

Top Gear Star Refuses To Move Up North In BBC Removals Shakeup

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed the shocking decision that he would rather resign from working for the BBC than move up north.

The BBC has sold many of its office buildings and is relocating to Media City UK in Salford, Manchester later this year.

Around 1,800 employees of the public service broadcaster will be affected by the move to the new northern base. More than 1,000 staff will be moving up from London and about 800 employees who currently work at the Oxford Road building, will have to relocate to Salford.

But the Top Gear star is the latest of many presenters to criticise the move. The 51 year-old has warned executives saying: “I’d rather quit than follow BBC up north.”

Currently there are no plans to hire a removals firm and shift the Top Gear programme production up north but the BBC has reported that at least 50% of its programming will be made outside London by 2016.

So far shows such as BBC Breakfast, Radio Five Live and BBC Sport will be moving by next year.

Clarkson has dubbed the move as ‘box ticking’ writing in his Sunday Times column that the Salford town was a “small suburb with little to offer beyond a Starbucks and a canal with ducks on it.”

And even though he describes himself as a pure-blood northerner, he said London by contrast was “the nation’s Oxbridge” full of the country’s brightest and sharpest brains.

Who knows what is going to happen with the BBC and its staff…whether Top Gear and its stars move up north or not, use London’s expert commercial removals firm Robinsons International for all your office and business removals.
