A shipping firm has been forced to pay a fine of almost one hundred thousand pounds after it was found guilty of sea pollution.
An investigation by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency revealed that Pretty Time Shipping had illegally discharged two tons of palm oil into the sea. The yellow lumps washed up on the beaches in East and West Wittering, in Sussex and the shore in Hayling Island, in Hampshire.
The shipping company, based in Singapore, will now have to fork out £95,000 after Southampton Magistrates’ Court heard that tests showed the cargo was linked to the tanker. The firm denies making an illegal discharge into the sea but was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £75,000 costs.
The waxy yellow lumps of palm oil that were washed ashore in January this year were found to have low toxicity but the beaches had to be closed for three days to undertake a thorough clean-up.
It is reported that the ship had been having problems cleaning its tanks and pipes after discharging the cargo in Holland and Germany. Prosecutor Wilmott told the court that lumps of the palm oil were found by investigators on board the ship a few days later.
A statement from Parakou Ship Management, Pretty Time’s parent company, said the incident was a one-off and they had a zero-tolerance policy towards pollution.

Shipping Warning Issued After Car Gets Swept To Sea

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

The Coastguard has issued a shipping warning for the Bristol Channel after a car got swept out to sea.

A brand-new Vauxhall Corsa hire car got stuck in some soft sand in Mumbles, in Swansea, and then was brushed out to sea during the high tide and now the coastguard crews are concerned that it could be floating anywhere in the Channel, one of Britain’s busiest shipping lanes.

The male driver and his wife managed to escape the car long before it became submerged on the slipway to the water’s edge but despite a two-hour emergency services attempt they were still unable to recover the vehicle.

Officials have alerted all vessels in the Channel to be cautious after fears it has drifted all the way to the Devon coast due to the sea currents.

A spokesperson for Swansea Coastguard said: “A local recovery service was called out, but they were unable to recover the vehicle.

“We broadcast navigation warnings every four hours, and in that broadcast today we have asked vessels to look out for a silver Vauxhall Corsa.”

A spokesperson for the Maritime Coastguard Agency said that the coastguard rescue team helped a woman from the car when the water was one foot from the front of the vehicle.

Robinsons International are experts in moving overseas and because we do offer international shipping services, it is important that we stay up-to-date with what is going on in the industry.

As an international shipping company, we ship antiques and furniture to varying countries across the world so it is likely that we do enter the Channel. And the irony is that we can also help consumers ship their cars with a specialist shipping container.

Property Market To Improve In New Government Plans

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

David Cameron has vowed to ‘get Britain building’ as part of the government’s plans to improve the housing market.

The Prime Minister has said that buyers of new homes will be able to borrow up to 95% of the value in a bid to help 100,000 Brits get onto the property ladder.

The new mortgage indemnity scheme is part of a wider strategy to build more homes and boost home ownership which is great news for Britons trying to sell their homes and move. It will enable lenders to provide mortgages up to 95% of the value of newly built homes to budding first-time buyers- supported by government guarantees and the government underwriting part of the risk.

It is reported that building more homes is now one of the coalition’s economic priorities with the number of new ones being built at its lowest ever record since World War II. Just over 120,000 new homes were made available last year.

However, the key proposals are to make more public sector land available for building and £440 million public funding to help developers ‘unblock’ stalled housing schemes. It is estimated that 130,000 building projects have been delayed due to funding problems.

Mr Cameron said the aim is to help the many people who cannot afford huge deposits needed to buy properties- so this means that the chances of people being able to afford to buy houses will increase which is great news for Robinsons removals UK.

The PM added: “When first-time buyers on a good salary cannot get a reasonable mortgage, the whole market grinds to a halt.

“If we don’t do something like this we are not going to get this vital market moving… we will restart the housing market and get Britain building again.”

If the scheme comes into fruition and you are fortunate enough to find a buyer for your home, contact Robinsons International for expert home removal services.
