Tips to moving abroad successfully

Thursday, October 14th, 2010
  • Learn about the local culture and how people interact and communicated in the area. Don’t overlook the locals and make sure you go out of your way to introduce yourself to friends and neighbours in the area.
  • Make sure you are aware of what the food is like out there. It might not be what you normally eat on a daily basis so you will need to get used to trying new foods.
  • Check what the local religious traditions are. The last thing you want to do is put your foot in it when it comes to a person’s religion.
  • Weather conditions. Whether it’s hot sun or snowy weather make sure you are fully aware of what types of weather to expect during certain times of the year and that you are fully equipped for the change in seasons.
  • Make sure that you are financially stable. The last thing you need is to fall into debt when you have moved abroad.
  • Get all the relevant visas sorted well before you leave. Check your passport is not due to expire. Most country don’t allow you in if your passport has only six months less.
  • Don’t just pack up and move abroad for the wrong reasons. Make sure that it is what you want and you aren’t just running away from problems, they won’t just disappear.
  • Use local expat forums and find out what life is like as a UK citizen living abroad. Find out about local events and communities in your area.

UK economy encourage British people to invest in Brazilian property

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

The current UK economy is rather bleak with many public spending cuts taking its toll on British citizens, so with this in mind the UK economy is encouraging people to invest in a foreign home such as a Brazilian property.

Ann Wright, international development manager at Primelocation.com, spoke to the Daily Telegraph regarding international real estate searches which have continued to be strong in recent months.

Ms Wright explained, “Public spending cuts, increased taxation and fewer jobs have led many to re-evaluate their lives here and consider moving abroad. While the economy is in its current state, people feel that it could be a good time to leave the UK.”

Worldwide Property Group recently undertook a survey to find that Brazilian property, along with real estate in Spain, the US and the Caribbean were of the most popular destinations for British people who want to invest in a home overseas.

Earlier this month, Nigel Lewis from Digital Property Group also said that British people are the most ‘enthusiastic’ when it comes to purchasing a property abroad.

Majority of employees would emigrate to improve health and wellbeing

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Over 75 per cent of employees would consider moving abroad to help improve their health and well being, according to new research from Aviva UK Health.

Research found that around 40 per cent of UK workers would move abroad to improve their health and wellbeing, as well as 36 per cent seeing other countries as a healthier environment and more varied lifestyle.

25 per cent said that they are not fully aware what state healthcare they would be entitled to of they were to move abroad, and a further 17 per cent believe that they would automatically qualify for free healthcare.

Almost half of the respondents (41%) wrongly believe that as a UK citizen, they automatically qualify for state-funded healthcare in the EU and Commonwealth.

Over a third of young workers (34%) wouldn’t take out additional health insurance if they were going to move abroad.

Teresa Rogers, international sales and marketing manager at Aviva UK Health, said, “In the UK we are in the enviable position of being able to choose to complement the ‘free at the point of delivery’ health services available from the NHS with a private health insurance policy.

“However, in many countries private health insurance is a necessity you can’t afford to be without.

“Healthcare provision varies greatly around the world and even routine medical care can prove costly in countries that don’t offer a similar service to the NHS.

“While we’re delighted to see that the majority of people would consider taking out additional private health insurance if they move overseas, our research clearly shows that many people have a very limited understanding of overseas health provision which could result in them choosing inappropriate cover or worse still, wrongly believing that either the state will provide cover or a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is sufficient.”
