Survey shows almost half of foreign residents want out

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Foreign residents in the UK earn less, save less, spend more, earn in a weaker currency, are fined by the British government and generally want to return home according to a new survey.

A HSBC International Expat Explorer Survey provides a fascinating insight into life on these shores for non-Brits. It shows that not only do Britons want to escape the sinking ship that is the UK, it seems that almost half (44%) of all expatriates living in the UK are crying out for overseas removals too.

Expatriates who live in the UK have to pay the British government a hefty fee of £30,000 if they want to remain in Britain long-term and avoid taxation on non-remitted funds, effectively eroding the benefit of being an expat in the UK.

Over three quarters of those surveyed by HSBC who were expats in the UK stated that as a result of the recession they have had to scale back all spending and that they are able to save far less than ever before – meaning they’re seeking a return home.

Robinsons gets another pat on the back

Robinsons never tire of receiving great third-party credibility, and so we’re chuffed to be one of the first companies to be awarded BS 8522, the new British Standard developed specifically for commercial and domestic furniture removals companies.

The new standard, which replaces former quality measure, PAS126, ensures activities such as obtaining preliminary information and quotes, undertaking the commercial moving service professionally and monitoring the process for quality, are all undertaken. BS 8522 establishes a minimum level of service and performance for companies dealing with the moving of office or business equipment.

Anthony Robinson, managing director of Robinsons Business Movers, said: “It’s obviously a great accolade to be one of the first removals company to gain this quality standard. The award reflects the hard work and professionalism our staff across eight UK locations have put into achieving the award, which gives our customers even greater confidence in the quality of our service.

“Moving premises is a stressful enough time without the added hassle of dealing with suppliers that don’t conform to an agreed set of standards. Accreditation to the well known BS kitemark is one way organisations can be sure that their removals company adheres to systems and standards that contribute to a trouble free move.”

International movers flock to France

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

We know all about the huge number of Brits leaving the UK each year to live abroad, but Halifax International has released a new report on expat trends with intriguing information on where these international movers are actually now residing.

According to a survey, 4% of British expats already own a home overseas with around a quarter saying that they are contemplating buying or moving abroad in the future. Nearly one third of Britons considering the move are under the age of 35 and more than two-fifths of those who have made the move said they have no intention of returning home, opting for one-way overseas removals.

Despite public opinion generally being that most expats move to Australia, New Zealand or South-East Asia, the report reveals that France is the number one destination for Brits abroad.

France held a 16% share of the expat total, well ahead of second placed Spain (10%) and the USA (8%). Australia was joint fourth along with Germany and Switzerland.
